How to Get More Referrals as a Life Insurance Agent

October 22, 2026•3 min read

Leads cost money. Referrals don't. And a referred prospect already has a reason to trust you, because someone they know did. The agents who build lasting businesses almost always have one thing in common: a steady stream of referrals from happy clients.

Referrals don't happen by accident, though. Here's how to earn them, ask for them and follow up the right way.

Why referrals matter

  • Warmer conversations. A referral starts with trust instead of skepticism.

  • Lower cost. Fewer purchased leads means more of each commission stays with you.

  • A healthier book. Referred clients are often a good fit, and they tend to refer too.

Step 1: Earn the referral

People refer agents who made them feel cared for, not sold to. That comes from:

  • Listening more than talking during the needs analysis

  • Recommending what fits their budget, not the biggest policy

  • Explaining the policy clearly at delivery

  • Following up after the sale, not disappearing

Step 2: Ask at the right moments

The best times to ask are when the client feels good about working with you:

  • When the application is complete and they feel relieved it's done

  • At policy delivery

  • After helping with a claim, a beneficiary change or a question

  • During an annual review

Step 3: Ask the right way

Vague asks ("Know anyone who needs insurance?") get vague answers. Be specific and low-pressure:

"I'm glad we got your family protected. Most of my clients come from people like you. Who's someone you care about, maybe a coworker who just bought a house or a friend who just had a baby, who might want the same peace of mind? I'll reach out respectfully, and if it's not a fit, no pressure."

Specific life events (new home, new baby, marriage, new job) help clients think of real people.

Step 4: Follow up the right way

  1. Get permission and context. Ask how the client knows them and whether they'll give a heads-up.

  2. Reach out promptly, mentioning who referred you.

  3. Respect the answer. If they're not interested, thank them and move on.

  4. Close the loop. Thank the client who referred you, without sharing private details.

  5. Follow contact rules. Respect do-not-call rules, consent requirements for texts and your carriers' and state's guidelines.

Step 5: Build a system

  • Tag referral sources in your CRM

  • Set reminders for annual reviews and policy anniversaries

  • Send birthday or holiday messages to stay top of mind

  • Track how many referrals you ask for and receive each month

Mistakes to avoid

  • Asking before you've delivered any value

  • Pressuring clients for a list of names

  • Contacting referrals without mentioning how you got their name

  • Forgetting to thank the person who referred you
