Use It While Living

Life insurance you can use while you’re living.

Many modern policies let you access part of the death benefit early if you suffer a qualifying critical, chronic or terminal illness.

The Basics

Protection for the hard days too.

Living benefits are accelerated death benefit riders. If you are diagnosed with a qualifying condition, such as a heart attack, stroke or cancer, or you can no longer perform certain daily activities, you may be able to receive a portion of your death benefit while living.

Riders, qualifying conditions and payout amounts vary by carrier and state. Any amount you accelerate reduces the death benefit your family receives later.

How it works

  • Critical illness: qualifying events such as heart attack, stroke or cancer
  • Chronic illness: unable to perform a set number of activities of daily living
  • Terminal illness: limited life expectancy as defined in the policy
  • Available on many term, whole life and IUL policies
  • Some riders are included at no extra premium; a discount may apply at time of use

Questions

Living Benefits FAQ.

Serving Alpharetta and North Atlanta from 126 N Main St, Suite B200.

Do living benefits cost extra?

Some carriers include them at no additional premium and reduce the payout when you use them. Others charge for the rider. We’ll show you the difference.

Does using a living benefit cancel my policy?

Not necessarily. The accelerated amount (plus any fees or discount) is subtracted from the death benefit, and the remaining coverage can continue.

Are living benefits taxable?

Accelerated death benefits are often received income-tax free under federal law, but it depends on your situation. Consult a tax professional.

Is this the same as disability insurance?

No. Disability insurance replaces income when you can’t work. Living benefits pay a portion of your death benefit for specific qualifying illnesses.
